schleppin’ it in Shanghai

Made a journey to Shanghai, China, which lies near the point where the mighty Yangtzee River meets the shores of the South China Sea. the world’s largest city at 30 million people, with the most densely packed urban area of anywhere on Earth. Having walked the streets and ridden the subways and high speed bullet trains all over this massive metropolis, I believe it. I went to admire and indeed marvel at the many awesome skyscrapers that dot the city, and they did not disappoint. In fact, it appears that China never met a building it didn’t want to build. It’s a space age city straight out of a science fiction movie. Many of the buildings there would themselves be major landmarks in any American city, but are instead dwarfed by bigger and even better-looking towers surrounding them. The Buddhist Temples I saw were beautiful as well, especially in the Huangzou/West Lake district, 95 miles west of Shanghai. Those were the positives.

the Bad: the food downright awful- the worst I’ve ever had, and I lived on Starbucks coffee and Tsingtao beer; the sheer masses of people everywhere, robbing you of even the slightest bit of personal space and peace; the lousy and downright rude customer service encountered not to mention the severe air pollution that was choking and eye-watering, made another visit to Shanghai unlikely. It was definitely worth seeing the place once, although many people rave about China, I have certainly been to other far better and satisfying locations. In fact, I look at Shanghai and my hope for a better world in the future diminishes. The Chinese are not good stewards of the Earth. Too many people using too much resources causing too much greenhouse gasses, over-fished waters and logged forests which are degrading the natural environment of the planet. It disgusted me actually. China currently has a one child per couple rule, but the government needs to to put the brakes on the population growth even more. make it NO children. Harsh, but it is a harsh reality that faces the place.

As for buildings, Shanghai is beautiful. For architects and mere admirers of beautiful structures, it was worth a visit. Once.

Also visited Hong Kong too, which was I liked better, but I only got to spend a few hours there strolling the city, which wasn’t enough time. Would like to go back there again someday…perhaps on my way to Thailand.

Honk Kong- the pearl of Asia. Home to over 7 million people. The city has 1,251 skyscrapers, which is more than double that of New York City. This is the result of stacking too many people on very little land. I spent five hours here exploring this international banking hub, which is also the world’s most vertical city. I enjoyed Hong Kong, which is surrounded by humid tropical jungle and the South China Sea. Will have to come back and spend more time here in the future, perhaps when I visit Thailand…
